WHAT IS MEDICARE SUPPLEMENT?
Fill the Gaps in
Original Medicare
Original Medicare (Parts A and B) covers a significant portion of your healthcare costs but not everything. You're responsible for deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance that can add up quickly, especially if you have a serious illness or frequent medical needs.
Medicare Supplement insurance also called Medigap is designed to fill those gaps. These plans, sold by private insurance companies, pay some or all of the costs that Original Medicare leaves behind, giving you much more predictable out-of-pocket expenses and peace of mind.
The Key Advantage: No Networks
Unlike Medicare Advantage plans, Medigap plans work alongside Original Medicare, and Original Medicare is accepted by virtually every doctor and hospital in the country. This means with a Medigap plan, you can see any provider who accepts Medicare, anywhere in the United States, without referrals and without network restrictions.
For people who travel frequently, have specialists they want to keep, or simply want maximum flexibility, this is often the decisive factor in choosing Medigap over Medicare Advantage.
Medigap Plans Are Standardized By Law
This is one of the most important facts to understand about Medigap: a Plan G from Company A covers exactly the same things as a Plan G from Company B. The federal government standardizes the benefits every insurer must offer identical coverage for the same plan letter. The only difference between carriers is price and financial stability. This means shopping with an independent agent like us, who can compare every carrier, is the only way to ensure you're not overpaying for identical coverage.
The Most Popular Medigap Plans
Plan G โ Most Comprehensive for New Enrollees
Plan G is the most popular Medigap plan for people new to Medicare. It covers virtually everything Original Medicare doesn't, including the Part A deductible, coinsurance, hospice care, skilled nursing facility coinsurance, and foreign travel emergencies. The only cost you're responsible for is the annual Part B deductible ($283 in 2026), after which Plan G covers 100% of your Medicare-approved costs.
Plan N โ Lower Premium with Modest Copays
Plan N offers nearly the same coverage as Plan G at a lower monthly premium, in exchange for small copayments; up to $20 for office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits (waived if admitted). Plan N does not cover Part B excess charges, which are rare but worth understanding. For people in good health who visit the doctor infrequently, Plan N can save meaningful money over time.
High Deductible Plan G (HDG)
HDG works exactly like Plan G, but you pay a high deductible ($2,950 in 2026) before the plan begins paying. In exchange, the monthly premium is significantly lower, often 60โ70% less than standard Plan G. This is an excellent option for healthy individuals who want catastrophic-level protection at a low monthly cost and are comfortable with the deductible risk.
Medigap Plan Comparison at a Glance
โถ Plan G: Highest coverage, predictable costs, most popular โ best for those who want comprehensive protection
โถ Plan N: Lower premium, small copays โ best for healthy individuals comfortable with modest cost-sharing
โถ High Deductible G: Lowest premium, higher deductible โ best for budget-conscious, healthy enrollees
Medigap and Prescription Drugs
Medigap plans do not include prescription drug coverage. If you choose a Medigap plan, you will need to enroll in a standalone Medicare Part D prescription drug plan to cover your medications. We handle this analysis as part of every Medigap consultation; finding the right Part D plan alongside your Medigap plan to minimize your total out-of-pocket costs.
When to Enroll in Medigap
The best time to enroll in a Medigap plan is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period: the 6-month window that begins the first month you have Medicare Part B and are 65 or older. During this window, insurance companies cannot deny you coverage or charge you more due to pre-existing conditions. After this window closes, insurers can use medical underwriting in most states, which can result in higher premiums or denial of coverage.
Why the Enrollment Timing Matters
This is one of the most consequential decisions in your Medicare journey and one we help every client navigate carefully. Choosing Medigap after your open enrollment window can mean permanently higher premiums if you have health conditions. We map your specific enrollment dates and make sure you apply at exactly the right time.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Medicare Advantage FAQ
How much does Medigap cost per month?
Premiums vary by plan type, age, gender, tobacco use, and carrier. In Ohio, Plan G premiums for a 65-year-old typically range from $120โ$230/month depending on the carrier. This is exactly why shopping multiple carriers matters, the benefits are identical, but the price can vary by 50% or more.
Can I be denied Medigap coverage?
No, during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period insurers must accept you regardless of health status. After that window, Ohio allows medical underwriting, which means you could be denied or charged more based on pre-existing conditions. Timing your enrollment correctly is critical.
Will my Medigap plan be accepted everywhere?
Yes, as long as the provider accepts Medicare, your Medigap plan will work. Because Medigap doesn't have its own network, any Medicare-accepting provider in any state will accept your coverage.
Can my Medigap plan be cancelled?
As long as you pay your premiums, your Medigap plan is guaranteed renewable; the insurer cannot cancel it. However, premiums can increase over time, which is why we track rate increase history when recommending carriers.
Does Medigap cover dental and vision?
No, standard Medigap plans do not include dental, vision, or hearing coverage. If you need these benefits, a Medicare Advantage plan may include them, or you can purchase standalone dental/vision plans. We discuss this tradeoff during every Medigap consultation.
Whatโs the difference between Plan F and Plan G?
Plan F covers the Part B deductible ($283/year in 2026) while Plan G does not. However, Plan F is no longer available to people who became eligible for Medicare after January 1, 2020. If you were eligible before that date, you may still be able to enroll in Plan F, but Plan G is almost always a better value today.
